The Hauz Rani pottery market in Delhi is a hidden gem that showcases the traditional art of pottery. Located in the southern part of Delhi, this market is a hub of skilled potters and artists who create beautiful pieces of art using their hands and imagination.
The market is situated near the Hauz Rani mosque, and it comes alive early in the morning when the potters start setting up their shops. The market is a maze of shops and stalls, and one can easily get lost in the labyrinthine lanes. However, the sheer variety of pottery on display makes it a fascinating place to explore.
The pottery available in the market ranges from functional items such as plates, bowls, and cups to decorative pieces such as vases, figurines, and sculptures. The potters here use traditional techniques and materials to create their pieces, and many of them have been practicing the craft for generations. They use clay sourced from nearby villages and shape it into various forms using a potter’s wheel.
One can witness the potters at work, skillfully molding the clay into shape and creating intricate designs on their pieces. The artisans also use various techniques such as hand painting, glazing, and firing to give their creations a unique look and feel. Hauz Rani pottery market: Personal Experience
I often crossed it on my way to Select Citywalk from Malviya Nagar metro station. But it was only recently that I decided to explore the beautiful Hauz Rani pottery market. The market does not have a large number of shops. But the variety of products is pretty great! I went there in search of ceramic pots for my plants. And the sheer number of options left me a confused buyer.
There are pots of every possible size, colour, and shape. Basically, you name it and they have it. And a regular 8-inch pot does not cost more than Rs 150. By this time, I was too excited, Kind of like a child in a candy store! So I started checking out the crockery as well. You can find some really pretty hand-painted serving platters, dinner sets, bowls, coasters, mugs, and pretty much anything you may need for your kitchen. Not only that, you can even find baking dishes at very reasonable rates. I even bought a couple of windchimes made of clay.
And the best part, the shop owners are the potters themselves. So nobody knows the goods better than them. In fact, they will even take orders and get you the items they do not have available at the moment. Be assured that these people will never try to sell you cracked or broken items. However, I do suggest that you check each and every purchase carefully before bringing it home. As these items are quite delicate, it is quite possible that some of them may be chipped.
The Hauz Rani pottery market is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in traditional art and crafts. The market is a unique blend of old-world charm and modern creativity, and it offers a glimpse into the lives of skilled potters and artists who are keeping the ancient craft of pottery alive.
