Laughter, nostalgia and more – Here’s a look at Sarabhai Take 2

I had been waiting… since the last episode aired in 2006. The last episode of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. When it aired on TV, there was not much of an audience for it. Everyone was watching Tulsi and Parvati being cringeworthy. But I swore by it – best show that Indian TV has produced.

Since the past few years, youngsters like me started going back to it, thanks to YouTube. In fact, in a recent interview I did with the show’s creator JD Majethia for another one of his shows, my main question was ‘When will Sarabhai be back?’

The Sarabhais were not like the other soaps on TV and the family was not like any other. Yet, there was a sense of nostalgia about it. So, even as I waited, I was mildly afraid that if a second season was ever made, it won’t match up to the first season.

Come May 16, 2017. It is 11 years later. But I am not in the least disappointed. The first episode of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai Take 2 is out. And I am just waiting for the next episode to be out already.

Monisha now has a son named Ornob (yes, that’s how they pronounce it) whom she insists on calling Guddu. Sahil is caught between Maya and Monisha as usual. Indu is still acting like a quintessential Narad Muni. And Rosesh is still mama’s boy, but now in love with a ‘singress’.

The hilarious supporting characters like Dushyant and Madhu phupha are also there, playing there part to the fullest. Basically, except the addition of a few new characters and swanky new penthouses for the Sarabhais, nothing has changed.

Most importantly, the writing and direction remain as witty and hilarious as before. Rosesh is still writing poems we will remember for years, Madhu phupha still cannot hear, Dushyant is still saying ‘I’ll explain’ and Monisha continues to swear by her babas.

If you are a fan of the original series, you really can’t miss Take 2. Thank you to the producers for being true to the original. And hats off to you (pun intended)!
